Why waking at the same time can reset your body clock
To sleep well more consistently, the most helpful thing you can do is to have a consistent time you wake up. The reason for this is that your circadian rhythm or body clock is tuned into your wake-up time more than your bedtime. Your circadian rhythm adjusts gradually over several days as those of you would know if you’ve had jetlag. And sleep doctors refer to a confused circadian rhythm as ‘social jetlag’ - irregular wake-up time due to a bad night’s sleep or waking late on the weekend. Unfortunately, most of us vary our wake-up time based on how we sleep that night, working against how our body naturally regulates sleep. The key is to wake at the same time (give or take 15 minutes) every day regardless of what time you went to bed or how badly you slept. Eventually, this will reset your body clock and sleep length and quality should improve.
